The ban on greyhound racing doesn’t just stop dogs from taking to the track. It ends the funding Greyhound Racing New Zealand relies on to care for their ongoing welfare… But it’s not only the dogs affected.
Thousands of good, greyhound-loving New Zealanders who have built their businesses in and around the industry now face an uncertain future. Trainers, handlers, track curators, vets, re-homers and breeders. Everyday people whose lives have been built around caring for these animals.
Unlike the greyhounds, they can’t be rehomed. This decision doesn’t just end a sport. It puts thousands of livelihoods at risk overnight, without a clear plan for the people or the dogs left behind.
If this ban is to stand, then those who made it must also take responsibility for what comes next.
Because walking away now doesn’t end the problem. It creates a new one.
